Character Connection (8): Lady Julia Grey

Character Connection is a weekly meme hosted by Jen at The Introverted Reader every Thursday. It’s where we get to discuss our favorite book characters and what we love about them!

I am a huge fan of the Lady Julia series, as you can see from my review of Dark Road to Darjeeling from yesterday. To go along with it, I thought I would talk about Lady Julia Grey. She is one of my all time favorite strong female main characters!

To say that I met Nicholas Brisbane over my husband’s dead body is not entirely accurate. Edward, it should be noted, was still twitching upon the floor.

That is the first line of Silent in the Grave, the first book of what is so far a four book series. Isn’t it the greatest opener ever?

Lady Julia is part of the teasingly diverse and eccentric March family by birth. Her father and various siblings add a lot to the series, but she definitely stands out as being one of the strongest and sharpest of the lot.

When she begins to suspect her husband’s death was not from natural causes as was originally thought she becomes bound and determined to solve the mystery. She involves Nicholas Brisbane, a private inquiry agent, into the mess and their interactions are nothing short of electric. They really churn up strong emotions when together: and I don’t mean just the positive ones.

As the series continues, she ends up being involved in other mysteries and always manages to involve various members of her family along with Brisbane. The stories are quite dark and Gothic, involving subjects such as jewel thieves and incest. She always manages to control her personal thoughts and fears and perseveres to the end.

This is seriously a fantastic series, and even though there is a strong romantic plot running through the books…Lady Julia is nothing if not a strong female character that can stand on her own. I definitely recommend checking her out for yourself!

If this wasn't already on my to-read list, it would be now. Strong female characters are so great to come across. I'm reading Changeless right now and Alexia Tarabotti definitely qualifies too.

That is a great opening line!

Oh my god. I think I am in love already by the opening line.

    Awesome post.

I'm a new follower. Hope you'll check out my site. I had this book and loaned it to someone and I don't think I got it back. I loved this book. I didn't follow up because I didn't remember the title or author. She was so practical and rational about her husband's death. I loved that first line! I'll have to check out the others. Thanks for reminding me of her!
