Character Connection is a weekly meme hosted by Jen at The Introverted Reader every Thursday. It’s where we get to discuss our favorite book characters and what we love about them!
Eli is one of the main characters in Sarah Dessen’s book Along for the Ride. Sarah makes it easy to fall in love with all of her male MCs, but Eli definitely belongs close to the top of the heap.
When the book starts, Eli is the “mysterious loner”, and Auden, the female character, is intrigued by him. She learns that he hadn’t always been so quiet, but that he was involved in a tragedy that changed him pretty drastically. Auden had never been a very social person, but she felt drawn to Eli.
As the book progresses, Eli and Auden become close. Auden had some problems in her past as well, and she felt comfortable with Eli because he didn’t try to make her talk about things. He was amazed by all the things she had never done due to her lack of social life, so he “adopts” her and drags her along to activities that most teenagers do regularly.
It is impossible not to fall for Eli over the course of the story. He becomes so devoted to helping Auden overcome her antisocial disorder, and he is so sweet and courteous. As he falls for her, he starts to come back to himself as well.
He is such a swoon-worthy character. If you haven’t met him yet you definitely need to pick up a copy of Along for the Ride!
