Review: Dead Beautiful by Yvonne Woon

A haunting love story about desire, danger, and destiny.

After Renee Winters discovers her parents lying dead in California’s Redwood Forest in what appears to be a strange double murder, her grandfather sends her off to Gottfried Academy in Maine, a remote and mysterious high school dedicated to philosophy, “crude sciences,” and Latin: the Language of the Dead. It’s here she meets Dante, a dark and elusive student to whom she feels inexplicably drawn. As they get to know each other better, Dante can’t seem to control his attraction either, and their desires gradually deepen into a complex and dangerous romance. Dangerous because Dante is hiding a frightening secret. A secret so terrible, it has him fearing for Renee’s life.

Dante’s not the only one with secrets, though. Turns out Gottfried Academy has a few of its own… Like, how come students keep disappearing? Why are the prefect-like Monitors creeping around campus during the night? And what exactly are the Headmistress and Professors really up to? Renee is determined to find out why.

Dead Beautiful is both a compelling romance and thought-provoking read, bringing shocking new meaning to life, death, love, and the nature of the soul. (Source:Goodreads)

My Review:

Thanks to Hyperion for letting me review this, I was dying to read it! Between the summary and the gorgeous cover it definitely sounded like my kind of book.

I am a huge fan of any book set in a boarding school. They are always creepy and full of old traditions and unsolved mysteries. This was no exception: something is rotten in the state of Maine. When Renee is forced to attend Gottfried Academy, it doesn’t take her long to catapult herself straight into the heart of the intrigue.

She is immediately drawn to Dante, the gorgeous loner. While there wasn’t quite as much development in their romance as I usually like…they also didn’t jump straight from 0 to relationship. Once Renee does think they’re finally getting things together, she finds out something that has her running in the opposite direction.

So, between Renee constantly finding dead things, Dante being so intensely focused on her, and all the weirdos following them around…this book has quite the suspenseful story. I ate up every word! I definitely recommend picking it up.

I'm with you on that! Pick this book up peoples! I have to say it was hard for me not to spoil what happens in the book when I reviewed it a few weeks back. It's so good and there's quite the twist that you can see coming but still go "WHAT" at. hehehe. I agree with you – LOVED it.

The cover alone makes me want to pick this up! 🙂 I think it's interesting that you say, "I am a huge fan of any book set in a boarding school. They are always creepy and full of old traditions and unsolved mysteries."

I actually went to boarding school and while there were some old traditions, there was very little about it that was creepy. I actually would have enjoyed a little more creep factor! But, because of this, I suppose I don't always read books set at boarding school.

But, you make this one sound interesting — I'll add it to my TBR list! 🙂

Have you ever noticed that that the weird things happen in either Washington state or Maine??? Is there some kind of paranormal magnet there? Anyway, the cover of that book alone makes me want to read it, but the one sentence in your review that says "has her running the other way" about Dante has me hooked. I'm going to have to get this one! Thanks for the great review

Love boarding school settings – I agree with you, there's so much you can do with them.

Will have to check this one out!
