Character Connection is a weekly meme hosted by Jen at The Introverted Reader every Thursday. It’s where we get to discuss our favorite book characters and what we love about them!
First off – this will contain MOCKINGJAY SPOILERS.
Okay so, funny story. After I finished Mockingjay, I was so upset that I couldn’t imagine ever being able to write a review. Even weeks later, every single time I think about the book I get hit with a huge wave of disappointment. So I figured I’d just pass, there are enough reviews for it out there anyway. No point in trying to focus all my thoughts on it…I knew I’d just turn into a giant squid of anger. So then, a couple of days ago, I shot awake at like 3 o’clock in the morning and had the overwhelming urge to vent about Gale Hawthorne. So I dragged myself out of bed and grabbed my review notebook. So, Mockingjay won’t be getting a review. But I gotta stand up for my boy.
Anyway…is Peeta or Gale the best man overall? Real tough choice here. Would you rather be married to Aragorn or the Pillsbury doughboy? I can see the arguments now…”but…but…Peeta gave her a loaf of bread when she was young and starving! Doesn’t that just make you want to melt?!?”
Well…excuse the hell out of me. No, it really doesn’t. If Gale Hawthorne had been the one to find her, he would have told her to suck it up and then gone out and shot her a turkey. Not only that – he would have then taught her how to hunt for herself.
Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach him to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. Just sayin’.
If Gale wasn’t so (*attention* wonderful characteristic in a man alert) devoted to his family (the family that made no appearance in MJ? WTF?), he could have volunteered to go into the arena with Katniss. He wouldn’t have needed any “gee golly I’m in love with her” ploys or kisses for attention either. He’d have just needed someone to help him clean up all the bodies.
Gale Hawthorne was – by far – the most constant character in the series. In the first book, he thought the Capitol was a huge steaming pile of corruption. He never tried to back down or wuss out of his beliefs. I honestly think he was too much for Katniss to handle. So fine – she didn’t choose him. I’m okay with that. More than okay with that.
