Review: Virals by Kathy Reichs

Summary:

Tory Brennan, niece of acclaimed forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan (of the Bones novels and hit TV show), is the leader of a ragtag band of teenage “sci-philes” who live on a secluded island off the coast of South Carolina. When the group rescues a dog caged for medical testing on a nearby island, they are exposed to an experimental strain of canine parvovirus that changes their lives forever.

As the friends discover their heightened senses and animal-quick reflexes, they must combine their scientific curiosity with their newfound physical gifts to solve a cold-case murder that has suddenly become very hot if they can stay alive long enough to catch the killer’s scent.

Fortunately, they are now more than friends they’re a pack. They are Virals. (Source:Goodreads)

My Review:

I’ve never gotten around to reading Kathy Reichs’ adult series, but I was really excited to hear she was releasing a new YA series! I was definitely impressed with this, the first book of what will hopefully be a series on the Virals.

I found the plot to be very original and engaging. Everything seemed to make sense and work, nothing stuck out as being too far-fetched or ridiculous. The same goes with the characters. They fit very well with the plot, and although there wasn’t as much character development as I usually like, there is definitely room for that in the next installments of the series.

Tory and the rest of her friends make great sleuths, and when circumstances require them to adapt quickly to extraordinary (and terrifying) circumstances, they rise to the challenge. It will be a long time before I lose interest in them and their adventures!

I definitely recommend picking this up for a quick-moving action/adventure/mystery plot when it is released in early November. You’ll get sucked into the world of the Virals just like I did! So, while I hope there is a little more character development in the  next book, you can bet I’ll be getting my hands on it as soon as I can to find out!

Loved this book when I read it a few months back. Definitely can't wait for more of this series!

I'm with Lori. I got this at BEA, but have yet to get to it. I am hoping I like it, although I really prefer character development in what I read.

Sounds fun! I just figured out the whole Reichs-Bones connection the other day – wondered why her name was so familiar.

I absolutely adored this book! It was so fast-paced, and it read as more of a murder-mystery with sci-fi undertones than the other way around, which was super refreshing!
