You’ve Lost That Lovin’ Feelin’…

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted at The Broke and the Bookish.

You guys, the subject this week was books that broke your heart a little in honor of (not) celebrating Valentine’s Day.

For the first half, I decided to take things a little further and just go with the books least likely to get you in a V-Day state of mind…

1. The Stand by Stephen King. Sure there is a little romance in this one…but there is also death. Lots and lots of ugly, brutal death. Death by plague, death by murder…deathy death death death.

2. Jurassic Park by Michael Crichton. This book is truly excellent. If you love the movie – you ain’t seen nothin’ yet. The dinosaurs are scary, y’all.

3. Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk. The first rule about fight club is that you don’t talk about fight club.

4. The Godfather by Mario Puzo. Even if you never listen to my book recommendations – this is the time to change your mind. This book is fantastic. The plotting and excellent characterization will blow your mind! These people are twisted.

5. Roots by Alex Haley. I’m actually reading this one right now – prepare to be horrified by what people are capable of doing to other people.

Now, for this half – books that broke my heart (mostly in a good way).

6. Don’t Tell by Karen Rose. This is actually a romanic suspense novel, but these characters. Oh man. They will get to you too – I promise.

7. A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. You have to read it to believe it. Prepare to hug your family to death.

8. The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. This one is brand spankin’ new! It is not just a cancer book.

9. The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson. All the characters in this book are so vibrant and real, even the one that has recently passed away. Great writing. GREAT.

10. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling. Of course.

Is it bad that your choices to NOT put me in the mood for Valentine’s Day made me laugh, even though I haven’t read any of them?

I am literally the worst ever for forgetting Harry Potter. Seriously. But at least I remember A Monster Calls!
I wanted to put The Sky Is Everywhere on my list, but it kind of made me too happy because I loved it so hard that I left it out. I do love that book something fierce, though.
Also, Jurassic Park! Woot! That book was BANANAS. I had nightmares about velociraptors for MONTHS. Definitely not a good one for setting a “mood.”

TBH I am shocked you don’t have The Name Of The Wind on this list. I MEAN OH MY GOD KVOTHE!

Also, word, about Roots. That book is so hard to read. Obvi you know.

AND also I love the Stand, awesome awesome awesome book.

The Sky is Everywhere broke my heart as well and when Harry Potter ended my heart wasn’t broken, it was empty.

    Great list!

I really need to get my hands on The Fault in Their Stars.
The Stand is tied for my favorite novel ever! I haven’t read most of these, apparently. I feel an urge to add books to my TBR on goodreads….

FIGHT CLUB YAY! (run-on sentences indicate excitement)

I just checked out A Monster Calls from the library today. I’m a little bit scared because I’m horrified and terrified and petrified of being overly emotional about anything in life, ever. And everything I’ve ever heard about this book SCREAMS TEARS. But it’s Patrick freaking Ness, and he is only the greatest ever. And if I made it through Chaos Walking, I ought to be able to make it through this one, right? (takes deep breath, eyes book cautiously)

And yeah, I’m not going anywhere near TFiOS any time soon. After everyone started tweeting about it, I actually took it out of my actual pile and put it on my actual shelf for a while. I need to work up more nerve before I dive into that kleenex-fest.

I fear emotion. Can you tell?
