“I feel like a hero, and you are my heroine…”

The Top Ten Tuesday prompt at The Broke & the Bookish this week is kick-ass heroines. Before we go any further, I must admit to getting Hero/Heroine by Boys Like Girls stuck in my head. Sigh, love this song.

Y’all, when I sat down to think about who should make the list – I started realizing that kick ass can mean a lot of different things. So, I tried to split my list of heroines up a little differently…

Kicking Ass By…

…being witty:

Pride and Prejudice

1. Elizabeth Bennett. When I think of characters that aren’t afraid of speaking their minds and thinking independently? This lady immediately comes to mind. Witty, indeed. Heck, even her father thought so!

Masque of the Black Tulip

2. Henrietta Selwick. The second in the Pink Carnation series, this girl is SOMETHING ELSE. Sitting on the sidelines isn’t  in her DNA, and this girl can write quite the intriguing letter…

…being intelligent:

beekeeper's apprentice

3. Mary Russell. Sherlock Holmes himself vouches for her mind, do I need to say more? I hope not.

harry potter heroine

4. Hermione Granger. I’m pretty sure 99.9% of the world’s population probably associate Hermione’s name with crazy smart literary characters.

…wielding a parasol:

crocodile sandbank

5. Amelia Peabody. Conquering the mysteries of 19th century Egypt with flair, this woman is NO JOKE.

soulless

6. Alexia Tarrabotti. I always think of Alexia as Amelia Peabody transported to the supernatural wilds of Victorian England. Both characters are fabulous, either way.

…being tough:

naked in death

7. Eve Dallas. Eve is definitely one of the strongest characters on the list. Not only does she kick a lot of ass, but she has to deal with a lot of nightmares from her horrible childhood that a lot of people probably wouldn’t be able to handle.

vampire academy

8. Rose Hathaway. She can be a little full of herself, but that doesn’t mean she isn’t strong. I love the Vampire Academy series, and Rose is definitely the main reason for that.

…having supernatural powers:

graceling

9. Katsa. Born with special abilities in order to survive, Katsa is beyond tough. I bet she’ll be on a lot of lists today!

mistborn

10. Vin. The Mistborn trilogy are among my favorite books of all time, and a lot of that stems from the characters. Vin has the COOLEST MAGICAL POWERS EVER, and she works really hard at using them for good, trying to defeat the evil that is in power.
