Binding the Shadows by Jenn Bennett

Binding the Shadows by Jenn Bennett is one of my most anticipated releases of 2013. The kind of anticipate where a crazed book hoarder such as myself goes slightly insane and waits up until the pre-ordered title shows up on my Kindle the night of its release (11:13 PM in this case, if you’re curious). I then proceeded to rip through it like the freak that I am. What can I say? I love me some Arcadia Bell.

Binding the Shadows Jenn Bennett

So yeah, Binding the Shadows is the third book in the Arcadia Bell series. To be honest, I’ve only read the first two books (plus the semi-recent novella) once, so my memory on the exact points was a little shaky. Demons and magic and tiki bars, oh my. It took me a few pages to catch up with the world – the CRAZED world – of Arcadia and her super sexy boyfriend Lon. Now LON, I remembered just fine. *creepy eyebrow wiggle* Plus, he has a teenage son Jupe, who has to be the coolest kid ON THE PLANET. No kidding, next time I have the opportunity to name a pet? Jupe for the win.

Anyway, some vandals are on a robbing spree in Arcadia’s neck of the woods, and they end up busting into her bar. NOT COOL, Y’ALL. She spends the rest of Binding the Shadows figuring out who the heck they are – and what kind of crazy drugs they were on. Because they had totally juiced up powers that should have been impossible. Demon steroid juice? That sounds like a bad idea.

Complicating things is the fact that it is the holiday season and some of Jupe’s family from his mother’s side is coming to visit. Arcadia is crazy nervous about meeting them, and things only get worse when Yvonne – the crazy mama – shows up. Oh, the family angst. What would Christmas be without it? Arcadia should know better than to think her boys might be anything less than completely over the moon about her, though. My favorite scenes in this series ALWAYS end up being Arcadia/Jupe bonding moments. Have I mentioned how much I love that kid?

So, the end of this book is a KILLER. Seriously, Jenn Bennett left like 3 huge cliffhangers hanging in the wind. The actual final thing wasn’t hard to guess thanks to a few well placed hints throughout the story, but still. I want to know what happens next. *whines*

This series is absolutely a must read for paranormal romance and urban fantasy fans – seriously. The magic world is so in-depth and interesting and complicated…and judging from Arcadia’s discoveries throughout Binding the Shadows, we are just scratching the surface. The characters are out of this world fantastic, and I can’t even tell you how much I love watching Arcadia, Lon and Jupe forge a family (if they ever have a huge falling out, my head will likely explode).

Read this series you guys! I mean it.

To Sum it Up:

  • This series has some of my absolute favorite characters – seriously, I want to get another dog just to name him Jupe.
  • CLIFFHANGER ALERT. The way this book ends will make you want to rip out your hair. (Or possibly just Jenn Bennett’s!)
  • This is absolutely my favorite paranormal series, I can’t recommend it enough.
