The Lions of Little Rock centers around school segregation in 1958 Little Rock, Arkansas. It is based on real events, and Kristin Levine did her research well. The book is full of information about groups that were formed both in support and protest as well as actual people who were affected. I absolutely loved reading about these things included in the story that actually happened!

I’ve actually never read The Secret Garden, but I have seen several of the movies. The atmosphere and characterization definitely create a unique experience – and I felt the same vibes while reading The Humming Room.

Tall: Great American Folktales by Donnie Lemke

Misty at The Book Rat is having a graphic novel week over at her blog, y’all! In honor of that, I decided to read and review Tall: Great American Folktales edited by Donnie Lemke. I grew up with these stories, and had a ton of fun reading them now.

Paul Bunyan, Pecos Bill, John Henry and Johnny Appleseed are all four stories that I remember reading as a child, and Tall covers them all. I enjoyed all of them even though they are definitely meant for readers on the younger side. I think Pecos Bill is actually my favorite tall tale – I love reading about him riding Widow Maker and roping tornadoes!

The Only Ones by Aaron Starmer

The characters in The Only Ones by Aaron Starmer have to face things that would scare the crap out of anyone. What would you do if everyone around you suddenly disappeared? I don’t mean just the people you know. I mean everyone. Martin Maple has always lived a mostly solitary life – so it takes him awhile to fully understand the significance of being completely alone. When he begins his travels to the only place left in the world with living people, he has no idea what is coming.

Before I go any further, I just have to say one thing. Internet made with wood and string. You guys! How incredibly awesome is that? A kid in The Only Ones makes a form of the internet with wood tablets connected by string. I almost swooned with the creativity of it all. Very cool.

The Princess Curse by Merrie Haskell

The Princess Curse by Merrie Haskell retells the story of the Twelve Dancing Princesses from a different point of view – an onlooker. A young herbalist apprentice named Reveka. Her devotion to herb lore makes her certain that there is something she can do to help end the curse, so she throws herself into the task with no concern for herself. What follows brings the best of fairy tale lore alive with fantasy and determination. I absolutely couldn’t get enough of the story!
